MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL. As such, no specific implementation differences really exist.

Yes, MariaDB 5.6 appears to work just fine. MySQL 5.6 we have had some problems with. That's one of the reasons for our move to MariaDB.

and this is without mysqli support correct?
we are still using a older version that is customized for the customer that does not include the mysqli code updates.

MySQL or MariaDB really doesn't have much to do with PHP's mysqli functions support or no support.

i also run 5.6 on 3 separate standalones and so far no problem, in my opinion i have noticed that 5.6 has lesser load compared to the previous versions, but thats just me
