2) As you are obviously new here, I have some suggestions to help us all help you:
When you post, please post your entire configuration including (but not limited to) your installation method and vicidial version with build.
This IS a requirement for posting along with reading the stickies (at the top of each forum) and the manager's manual (available on EFLO.net, both free and paid versions)
You should also post: Asterisk version, telephony hardware (model number is helpful here), cluster information if you have one, and whether any other software is installed in the box. If your installation method is "from scratch" you must post your operating system and should also post the .iso version from which you installed your original operating system. If your installation is "Hosted" list the site name of the host.
If this is a "Cloud" or "Virtual" server, please note the technology involved along with the version of that techology (ie: VMware Server Version 2.0.2). If it is not, merely stating the Motherboard model # and CPU would be helpful.

3) Screens are started by the Vicidial Startup script which is expected to be in your "system run levels" (ie: /etc/init.d). If they are not starting at all, the script is missing, broken, or experiencing a crash due to some other software. You'll need to verify it's there ("vicidial" in /etc/init.d) and that when it runs it does not crash. Not for the beginner, but then again *I* made it work a decade ago ago when I was a beginner ...
4) Seriously: You could be at this for weeks attempting your first install manually instead of installing from Vicibox.com's .iso ... You're just torturing yourself. I have an idea: You could try a parallel installation using the old Ubuntu "Demo CD" so you would have a comparison box. That CD is just a "boot from it and it works" CD. You don't install anything (and when you reboot and take it out, the computer it was in has NOT been altered!). Just avoid the temptation to "install" anything and you're fine. LOL. Oh: Be sure the computer you run it on is OLD. It's Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. So an old Pentium or Core2Duo is fine.
5) And in case you didn't get that hint: You SHOULD be installing from the Vicibox.com .iso image, not "from scratch" in Ubuntu. Why are you doing that?
