I am testing vicidial for a doctor who needs a very simple campaign: dial a few thousand numbers, if the call gets picked up, play a message and hang-up, if it reaches a voicemail, play a different or the same message and close the call. No live agents. I loaded the leads but I am stuck as where to load the message in a wave file, asterisk-compatible, and where to tell vicidial to play the message.

I assume you are using 2.0.5 since you did not mention your version.
audio files get loaded in the /var/lib/asterisk/sounds directory
We recommend using 8bit 16k PCM wav audio files
Have you read the full ViciDial Manager Manual?
