Does "zypper dup" works as good as "up -y"

Just wondering

"as good as" is subjective. dup will remove obsolete packages plus bring the highest version of others. But what will that affect? Hm.

I wouldn't go there unless I tested it with a virtual server first and verified full operation after.

Also: I don't recommend upgrading or altering the OS once Vicidial is installed and running. Security is "whitelist!" so nobody touching your servers is unknown. At that point, if you have added the IP of a hacker to your whitelist firewall, keeping updated packages is unlikely to be successful. Avoid hacker IPs, however, and you're good. That's why I like whitelisting.

Constant updates to the OS merely add another eventual "break me" button and busy work for the IT staff. No point, only risk of failure.
