reboot fails

Postby ronsrussell » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:33 am

On our dialer, issuing a reboot command does not result in a restart. It only stops all of the screen sessions and the network. A second reboot issued a few minutes later will then restart the machine. This system is running VICIDIALER 2.0.5b0.5 on SUSE 10.3 running on a Dell PE1750. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try
Code: Select all
telinit 0
, and see if that works any differently for you.

As I understand it, telinit 0 is the same as shutdown -h now. To reboot one would use telinit 6. This info is based on the man page info. I have never used this command directly, so I really don't know. But I will try them both. As for using "shutdown -r now", yes I tried it and obtained the same results as when using reboot (which as I understand is the same as shutdown -r now). Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.

reboot and shutdown are usually the same command, yes.

On some distributions, they do "other stuff", and then call telinit.

Telinit just sends the signal to init, and init goes about changing the runlevel, regardless of what else is going on.
