Is the server up though? Might be a video driver issue.

Well I tried to connect to it via SSH but no luck. When I install linux without compiling the kernel in the first few steps of scratch install it starts up fine. What am I doing wrong.

It is most likely the drivers causing problems for some reason. Have you tried not recompiling the kernel?

When you say "the screen is blank after restart" ... when does it go blank?

does it shut down, restart and then go through the "post"? (BIOS)

after the "post" does it load grub (or whatever your bootloader is)?

Up until this point, the kernel hasn't come into play yet ...

After this, does it begin loading your drivers and then "go blank" or what?

At some point there must something on the screen, the question is what was Last.
