Heres an excerp from one of my setups (60 Seats, g729, full recording):
(1) DB Server:
Processor: Core2Quad 3.0 GHZ
Motherboard: Intel Motherboard (Much better for kernel compatibility)
RAM : 8 GB DDR2 800 MHZ (the higher the MHZ better)
HD : WD RAPTOR 10,000 RPM (there is a 15,000 RPM in the market right now i suggest you getting it)
Linux Distro: Debian 64 bit
(3) Asterisk Servers:
Processor : Intel Core2Duo 2.5 GHZ (Cheaper)
Motherboard: Intel Motherboard (Much better for compatibility)
RAM: 4 GB DDR2 800 MHZ (the higher the mhz the better)
HD : WD RAPTOR 10,000 RPM (get the 15,000 RPM thats in the market today)
Asterisk Version: 1.2.30 / Zaptel 1.4
Linux Distro: OpenSuse 64 / Ubuntu Server 64 / Debian 64
* Get the sangoma USB Voice timer for good results in voice quality
(1) Web Server
Processor: Intel Core2Duo 2.5 (Cheaper and new)
Motherboard: Intel Motherboard
RAM: 2 GB DDR 800
HD: WD RAPTOR 10,000 RPM
Linux Distro: Debian 64 Bit
ADDED NOTES:
* 64 bit distro can help very much in reducing server load and has more speed in processing, the Core2Quad Processor is good for the database server since it will be flooded with mysql threads.
* In my experience an E1 Connection (2mb up and Down) can handle 40 to 45 simultaneous calls on g729 codec via SIP
* IAX Trunking the asterisk servers for load balancing really helps
* Invest in a good consultant who can do the job right
