Installation Problems

Postby thebbxx » Sat Apr 25, 2009 5:14 pm

I am in the process of setting up the prerequisite apps and I have bumped into a couple of problems so far:

MYSQL
----------
chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql/var
chown: cannot access '/usr/local/mysql/var': No such file or directory

NTP
---------
./configure
....
config.status: creating adjtimed/Makefile
config.status: error: cannot find input file: adjtimed/Makefile.in

We do not recommend using CentOS

I would suggest that you try ViciBox ISO CD installer:

Have people had problems installing on CentOS, or has it just not been documented?

Thanks,

We do not recommend CentOS because of the problems that happen only with redhat-family distros like:
- process preemption set to DESKTOP, even on server distros
- poor package maintenance(multiple issues with perl)
- backporting of unsupported kernel modules
- renaming of binutils and libraries to non-standard names and locations
- other mysterious performance and bug issues that only seem to exist on these distros

If you really want to use CentOS we recommend:
- downloading a kernel.org kernel and compiling it for your system
- downloading perl source code and compiling it
- download the complete GNU binutils and installing
- not using RPM for anything, install all programs from source

Of course at that point you have spent a lot of time doing all of this and you really aren't using CentOS anymore either.

What we do recommend is:
- ViciBox (based on Ubuntu server)
- OpenSuSE
- Slackware

Thanks, I appreciate the response! I will try the ViciDial CD. I guess the reason I wanted to compile from scratch is in case I would want to change some code, or add some features in the future.

The ViciDial Server Install ISO contains full Aserisk source code and full ViciDial source code, so you can make changes with it if you want in the future.

If you really want to "grass roots" it, start with the Vicibox install anyway. It will get you a live system so you can understand the game plan. Then get a P4 off-lease and "scratch install" EXACTLY as given (I use gentoo, but i'm weird, you should stick with Slackware). It may take a bit more effort, but you'll have a functional system the whole time (and the P4 is under $100, right?).

In the end you'll have a full understanding of the entire system's installation if you want to build custom versions later. And you'll find out that you CAN customize the Vicibox install if you want to (and you'll know how).

And in both cases, you'll have a lot of folks familiar with your install right here on the forum. Much easier to do this with Help. (This place has saved me MASSIVE headaches! You have no idea!)

Or use VICIDIALNOW.

It is based on Centos. Pop the CD wait for it to boot up, press enter to install. Grab a coffee, check your emails and when you get back it is installed and you just need to configure your sip providers and phones.

That is if you really want to use centos as your Linux Distro. (Im still using it too)

Then try vicibox also. It is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian. A lot of people swears by the performance of Debian and ViCiDial. The distro vicibox is made by the Vicidial Group (which maintains the VICIDIAL open source project)

In the end it doesnt really matter what you use. Its how you can plan for it and how can you handle the headaches that come with the job :)

Plus, Get the Agent and Manager's Manual. The manual saved my ass multiple times. ( Yes I read the manuals when needed)

vicidial does not do good in centos, if your really into auto installers i would strongly recommend vicibox specially that its made by the authors of vicidial itself and not some offshoot, stay away from centos and any vicidial installed with it, debian is way too far from centos when it comes to performance and stability
