ViciBox 3.0.5 through 3.0.9 32-bit critical notice

Postby Kumba » Thu Dec 02, 2010 9:29 pm

Sometime during the 3.0.5 build the extra kernel modules were not loaded into the build. This was found in 3.0.9. The result is some SCSI controllers, NICs, etc, not loading after the install. The solution is as follows:

After the OS installs, and with an internet connection, you need to take the following actions:

1) Boot from the hard-drive (NOT THE CD!)
2) At the GRUB screen, make sure "openSUSE 11.3" is selected
3) Type 'e' to edit the boot options
4) Using the arrow keys, highlight the line that starts with "kernel"
5) Type 'e' to edit this line
6) Using the arrows keys, move the cursor to the left until you see the letter 'pae'
7) Change 'pae' to 'default', do not add any extra spaces
8) Press enter when done
9) Using the arrow keys, highlight the line that starts with "initrd"
10) Type 'e' to edit this line
11) Change 'pae' to 'default', do not add any extra spaces
12) Press enter when done
13) Press b to boot with the default kernel, this is temporary, rebooting will not reboot with this kernel
14) Once the system boots up, login as root
15) Type 'zypper in kernel-pae' to install the missing kernel modules
16) When done, type 'reboot', the system will reboot, and you should be good to go

Obviously, if your system boots fine, you should just do step 15 and 16 from the list. This will take care of the missing components and should not require recompiling anything.

This will all be fixed in ViciBox Redux v.3.0.10, but the build environment for that is currently on the fritz. The OpenSuSE team is working on it as we speak to correct it.

oh, Kumba, finally someone who got the answer. Thank you so much for working this out, I'll give it a try in time to see if I can get my vicibox on my LSI RAID.

best wishes,

Hi Kumba,
We have a similar problem to the one described by ronator in thread
http://www.vicidial.org/VICIDIALforum/v ... hp?t=14524

We are using Vicibox 3.0.9. After os-install with default partion based setup, at very first reboot our Dell 2800 (with MegaRaid) complaints it cannot find /dev/sda2.

We went through all the above points, but to our surprise it was already "default" and not "pae" at point 6-11

We are stuck into this, any help will be really appreciated

then you are installing a very old version of ViciBox if the kernel is 'default' not 'pae'.

Try download v.3.0.9 and repeating

The other possibility is that you have the 64-bit which does not use PAE.

Can you clarify for us?

Actually I am using 3.0.9 64bit, sorry for the mistake.
The fact is that I have this installation problem (/dev/sda2 not coming up) since v 3.0.8 and I had tried both 32 and 64 bit of 3.0.8 without success.

Tomorrow I will try with 3.0.9 32 bit and I will come back with results.

Thanks
Dan

I have installed 3.0.9 32 bit and at grub it still says default and not pae and the problem it cannot find /dev/sda2 still remains.

I'm quite sure I am installing 32 bit version, I downloaded the iso once more.

After booting with CD the result of "uname -a" is the following:
Linux dialer02 2.6.34.7-0.5-default #1 SMP 2010-10-25 08:40:12 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.

Just to be sure, I looked into the iso and it contains the file ViciBox_Redux-read-only.i686-3.0.9.

After os-install what I see on the GRUB screens after hitting "e" (edit) is the following:

-kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.5-default root=/dev/sda2 resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x317
-initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.7-0.5-default

I just wonder if someone else is getting this strange behaviour...
Kumba, is it really definite that it should be pae and not default on 32 bit?

Ronator, did you finally succeded or give up installing on your server?

What else can I do (not mentioning buying a new server) ???

Thanks
Dan

change pae to default

Postby ronator » Thu Dec 16, 2010 11:55 am

Well, I am sorry to say, I did not succeed
I used the vicibox-redux 3.0.6 (not the DB-only) because all my phone servers use this version.
I changed both grub lines from pae to default, and then it says : error 15, file not found, as if this kernel image was not there. I also tried without default or pae (also removing the last minus) and it finds nothing. It should make no difference that I always choose runlevel 3 as default ? I am not used to use a Display-manager on a Linux-server 8)

Since I cannot mount the raid/hdds after "firstboot" I will now reinstall and see if I can locate the kernel image before I do "restart now", because in this moment I can mount everything. First of all: booting the live-cd, it says right before login that i use open suse 11.3 with pae-kernel ... Hmm !

What did I found on the boot partition ? ->
I found the vmlinuz-*-pae and ... also a vmlinux-*-default, (yes vmlinuX !) but it was still gzipped ! I gunzipped it, and, well: no initrd for default found ... after trying to boot the gunzipped default, it says unsupported file format :/ (I deleted the line with initrd, because there is only a pae-initrd and as far as I know it is not really needed).I also tried to boot the symlinks (initrd + vmlinuz) but it brings me back to the same situation ?
Do you think I have a better chance with 3.0.9 ?

Be the first to test 3.1.0. Then I don't have to reinstall 20 times again! You can be the guinea pig

default/pae

Postby ronator » Thu Dec 16, 2010 1:47 pm

I tried the same with 3.1.a and it does not work. editing grub lines brinngs nothing, there is no default kernel. I guess, it's not worth trying 3.09 ...

so are there any other options ? and what did floydans mean ? vicibox RC 2 o_O ??

giving up

Postby ronator » Thu Dec 16, 2010 1:58 pm

I think I can save a lot of (future) time, if I just install an usual openSuSE 11.3-x64 from DVD and then use the installation just for DB-only. Since the standard distro has no problem with those suc**ng drivers, and since I cannot/won't do this without RAID, I may leave the webserver on the strongest phone server. This is not what I originally wanted to design, but time is running, the project must be done and I wanna have some days off work over the holidays ...

You can call me really frustrated. I thought Kumba's hint might be the solution but ... what is not there, cannot be booted. But hey, let's have a last try with 3.0.9, maybe Kumba's work-around is working there (hence, 3.1.a got very "slim" on cd) ... trying the 64bit version ... there should be no pae, right ?

phoney funky

Postby ronator » Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:15 pm

well, just to be fair, I gotta mention: my phone servers (HP Proliant 380 DL380) come with a "Smart Array 6i controller". I installed 2 hdds on every machine with RAID 1 and vicibox-redux 3.0.6 and there are NO PROBLEMS/BUGS, smoothly running. But the big-daddy-machine (8 cores, 32GB RAM) just has this LSI MegaRAID installed but vicibox-redux definetely does not like it  !

vicibox-redux 64 bit 3.0.9 only offers default kernel and default initrd and it still fails to find /dev/sda2 ...

oink, oink, I am the pig with bad luck :?

You should PM floydans in case he stopped reading this thread. ViciBox 2? Maybe he is talking about Goautodial.

Sorry, for not answering before.

What I installed is Vicibox 2.0.0 which you can find in the archived iso page:
http://download.vicidial.com/iso/vicibox/server/archive/

Maybe you may want to try some other version like 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 or maybe 3.0.1...

What I can tell you is that I have tried all versions from 3.0.4 to 3.0.9 (both 32 and 64 bit) without success on my DELL with MegaRaid controller

Version 2.0.0 worked fine for me, installs and boots with no problem at all.
But beware, it is an old version of vicibox and only 32bit is available.

After successful install I upgraded vicidal to latest trunk version from svn.

If you don't have other driver or compatibility issues or just can do without 64bit then this could be a solution. Well, at least it was for me! :)

This thread is interesting but I am having this issue on the 64bit build with 3.1.8. I can do the os-install but it can't find the root mount once it boots up. Using a Dell PowerEdge 2950, PERC 5/i. Any ideas?
