Vicidial in EC2 ?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if hosting a Vicidial install in Amazon Ec2 could be a good idea ?

My first concern would be if it's technically possible at all and I'm also not sure what the cost of the hosting would looks like for 10 to 25 agents.

Anyhow I tough someone might have already accomplish or tried this and could share his experience.

Summary: DO NOT attempt to Virtualize Vicidial locally or in the cloud or a hosted environment.

DO run Vicidial in the cloud or a hosted environment if you have the full hardware dedicated to Vicidial. So ... no "VPS" (Virtual Private Servers) as the word Virtual is involved and thus Vicidial will fail under load. Note that when you attempt to "reserve" a full hardware-based server in the cloud (not leased hourly or daily and virtualized) your cost will generally exceed that of a hosting facility. Amazon and those other virtualized systems make money by using "unused" CPU cycles and overbooking their systems (just like an airline). But Vicidial has NO unused CPU cycles. Crash and burn. Look up perl hi-res timing and research others who have attempted over the last decade.

Virtual is nice, however, for development and testing for one or two agents but will fail miserably when put under load.

We have few clients that are running VICIdial on the Amazon cloud. There are quote a few things that can go wrong, and configuration issues that are unique to VMs and managed cloud services like EC2. Two main takeaways:
- Reduced capacity, you will need more server resources than if you ran on bare hardware
- Reduced reliability, Your downtime will be higher than if you ran on bare hardware

If these are acceptable to you, then go for it.

LOL Bill. Can I get a vanilla cone? I learned this one the hard way myself, lol. (p.s. he warned me back then as well and i didnt listen) But it did help me learn the install process more and get more familiarized with asterisks issues and such, it was definitely a learning expereince and I do not regret it. But for production mode, its just not feasible
